How do you add a Blog Roll?

Just a simple blog related question. How do you add a blog roll to your blog? I love blog rolls, and have subscribed to many interesting blogs because of it., and would like to add one to my site for that purpose. Sadly, I have been unable to find out how to add it. Any help would be lovely. :)

Also, what about you, do you find blog rolls a necessity for your own blog, or blogs you read?

  1. I don't find blog rolls necessary at all, but I like to show which other blogs I read in an easier way than people having to click through every follower and see if that follower has a blog.

If you're asking how to follow a blog, it seems I now need to go the blog's home page, then copy the url, then go to blogger and add the blog to my reading list with the URL.

As for displaying the blogroll, You need to go to design, then in the layout add a new gadget. Rename it to Blogroll (or whatever you like), and the type of gadget it is is "BlogList" under the "basics" tab in the popup that comes up when you add this gadget. You can also do this with "Link List" although that won't update as the people you read update their blogs. From there it's pretty easy to figure out :) I display all the blogs I read, although I was trying to, for a while, only display ones that weren't as well known. I was trying to get more exposure for the less known bloggers in that way and also not keep new readers constantly going to jestertrek or evoganda etc by default.

  3. @Truen1ght, ahh thanks for the info! =) I kept look for Blog roll, and completely skipped blog list when looking through the gadgets. =P also, I love that idea. In fact, I went through your blog rolls picking articles at random, and have found several newbies that are very enjoyable to read. =)

@Victor, no problem, but thanks anyway =)

  4. Hi there,

I just found your blog, courtesy of the Newbie Blogging Initiative and I felt like I wanted to chime in on this subject.

I like to keep a Blogroll, for a number of reasons. For starters, it's a great way to network and to give your readers an alternative, just in case they may not agree with an opinion or a strategy that you have posted. I never want to feel like I'm trying to sell my ideas as the only way to do things or to think about things.

It's also a way to show appreciation for blogs that you enjoy and the people behind them. If I enjoy a blog enough, I want others to enjoy them, too and I want to give them that good publicity and some additional traffic.

The only thing I would caution about Blogrolls is that they can get political very quickly. It's very easy to fall into the trap of expecting someone to add you to theirs because you added them, or seeing someone who used to have you on theirs take you off one day and get angry about it, etc. If you think that's something you can avoid, then I would encourage you to toss up a Blogroll and show some support to the people that you enjoy or that you think your readers might enjoy.

    Good luck!
